Youth-Owned Brands Awards Honour Africa’s Young Trailblazers in Sandton

Hundreds gathered at Luxx Venue in Sandton on June 21 for the 4th annual Top 16 Youth-Owned Brands Awards, celebrating the continent’s brightest young entrepreneurs.
The event recognised youth-led brands across sectors including technology, arts, health, tourism, and manufacturing.
Hosted by past winners, this year’s ceremony welcomed its first international awardee from Namibia.
Yoba founder Pat Mahlangu said the awards aim to support youth development and challenge the status quo.
Among the winners was Grace Mondlana, who took home the Top Personalities and Influencers Award for her standout work as a content creator.

South African Engineers Released After Two Years in Equatorial Guinea Prison

Two South African engineers, Frederik ‘Frik’ Potgieter and Peter Huxham, have finally been released after spending over two years in prison in Equatorial Guinea.
The men were arrested in February 2023 and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
They maintained their innocence throughout the ordeal.
Their release follows a presidential pardon from Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
Their families, overwhelmed with relief, expressed deep gratitude to everyone who supported the campaign for their freedom.
South African and UK diplomatic efforts, along with international advocacy and legal support, were key to their release.
The South African government welcomed their return and reaffirmed its commitment to diplomatic cooperation with Equatorial Guinea.
The families now request privacy as the men begin the process of healing and reintegration.

Rectron Opens New Digital Lab at Duduza School to Boost STEM Learning

Rectron, a leading South African ICT distributor, has partnered with Assar Moloka Secondary School in Duduza, Johannesburg to launch a new ICT lab aimed at improving digital skills.
The state-of-the-art ‘Rectron Technolab’ includes 41 modern computers and forms part of Rectron’s Progressive Educational Upliftment (PEU) programme, which supports STEM education in under-resourced schools.
The lab was officially handed over on June 5 and is already giving learners hands-on experience with technology.
Rectron CEO Spencer Chen and chief of people Kutlwano Rawana attended the handover alongside Department of Education officials.
The school’s pass rate rose from 84% to 94% in 2024, and this new facility is expected to support even greater progress in the years ahead.
