The University of Johannesburg has been ranked as the best in sustainable development in Africa and the 23rd in the world.
The 2025 Impact Rankings, which asses universities against the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, measures how institutions globally are delivering social, environmental, and economic impact.
UJ is now ranked among the top 30 universities in the world out of 2,318 institutions that have been evaluated.

Free State Helium extraction project to boost regional economic development

The Renergen Helium extraction project in Virginia in the Free State, holds the potential to become the world’s largest helium production facility.
The project which has entered its second phase, is expected to create atleast a thousand temporary jobs, with around 250 permanent employment opportunities.
Renegen's CEO Stefano Marani says secondary industries that will be formed as a result of the benefit from the plant, will open up even bigger employment opportunities.
The plant is one of the 7 facilities for the xtraction of helium gas in the world.
