Three South African juniors enter Australian Open main draw

South African tennis has three players in the main draw of the Australian Open Juniors, showing a new generation of talent.
Sixteen-year-old Jahnie van Zyl earned her spot through qualifying, beating Japan’s Kokona Ishii in a tight match. In the boys’ draw, 17-year-old John Bothma and 18-year-old Connor Doig gained direct entry thanks to their top-50 world junior rankings.
Bothma and Doig have strong records on the junior circuit, with Doig also a former South African junior champion.
The tournament starts Saturday in Melbourne, giving these young players a big stage to showcase their skills.

Petersen, best known for District Six: The Musical, used his work to document the lives and experiences of displaced communities, with productions that reflected Cape Town’s history, humour and resilience.
The City of Cape Town says the recognition highlights the enduring role of culture in shaping identity and belonging.
The honour was conferred during a Special Council sitting at City Hall, where his daughter, Jawaahier Petersen, accepted the award on behalf of the family.
