“Marabi” musical returns to The Market Theatre
Story 1
Johannesburg’s Market Theatre has revived the musical Marabi as part of its 50th anniversary programme. The production opened on 19 January 2026 and runs until 15 February 2026.
Adapted from Modikwe Dikobe’s book Marabi Dance and directed by Arthur Molepo, the musical tells the story of a family of first-generation black migrants in 1930s Doornfontein, highlighting the challenges of city life and social change.
The production incorporates marabi music, a style that emerged in Johannesburg’s townships, reflecting the cultural and social context of the period.
The revival is noted for its role in preserving South Africa’s musical theatre heritage and documenting the experiences of early urban communities. Cast member Josias Dos Moleele explains.

KwaZulu-Natal has launched the She Builds Advisory Body to boost women’s participation in construction and the built environment.
The body will advise on procurement access, reducing red tape, and improving subcontracting conditions, while also addressing financial barriers with banks and national authorities.
With women currently making up only 11 percent of the sector, officials hope to double that by the end of the term.
Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli called the initiative a transformative step for gender equality and empowerment in KZN’s construction industry.

Johannesburg women’s cycling group continues to grow
Story 3
A Johannesburg-based women’s cycling initiative is drawing increasing interest, after growing from a small group into organised rides attracting up to 40 participants.
Girls on Bikes was founded by Karabo Mashele, who learned to ride a bicycle as an adult and later started the group to encourage more women to cycle in a structured and supportive environment.
The group now hosts twice-monthly rides through Braamfontein, Newtown and the city centre, with safety escorts and beginner cycling lessons also offered.
Organisers say the programme is aimed at improving access to cycling for women, with members last year completing the 947 Ride Joburg challenge for the first time.
