A new South African animated series, Unpacking George, aims to raise autism awareness in families and communities.
The series follows George, a local character who learns about autism through his friendship with an autistic best friend.
It was created by retired advertising designer Derek Logan and autism advocate Dr Emile Gouws, and will be released on social media by Special Knead Café.
The episodes explore everyday experiences of autism from an African perspective, helping viewers understand and connect with the challenges and joys of autistic people.

Esmarelda Van Zyl-Kilia brightens oncology ward with custom canvas

To Krugersdorp West, where Esmarelda Van Zyl-Kilian, a community volunteer and founder of the WAS Foundation, has painted a canvas for a hospital oncology department after a friend undergoing chemotherapy asked her to do so.
She worked on the painting with her daughter and later shared the experience online, encouraging people to support others through practical actions such as checking in or offering help.
Van Zyl-Kilian says the moment reminded her why she started the WAS Foundation, which provides food and support to people facing hardship in the community.

Artists who shaped South African culture recognized

South African artists David Kramer and the late Taliep Petersen have been awarded Cape Town’s highest civic honour, the Freedom of the City.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis presented the awards in a ceremony that highlighted the artists’ creative achievements and their collaborations on musicals such as District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings.
