Restorative Justice Program Helps Teens Repair Harm and Stay Out of Jail
Teaser / Tailpiece story
In Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, a restorative justice program is helping offenders take responsibility and repair the harm they caused.
Since 2022, only one out of 115 participants has re-offended.
Instead of going to prison or juvenile detention, offenders admit what they did wrong and meet the people they hurt.
They work to fix relationships and get back on track.
One teen avoided a criminal record, got a job, earned a driver’s license, and repaired his relationship with his brother.
The program is now in 21 communities across Alberta. RCMP officials say it strengthens the community and keeps people out of jail.
