A newly renovated Transplant Intensive Care Unit has officially been opened at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
The upgraded facility will serve more than 200 patients currently waiting for kidney transplants, while also strengthening plans to establish a sustainable public-sector liver transplant programme in Gauteng.
Officials say the dedicated ICU will improve post-operative care and reduce reliance on private hospitals for life-saving organ transplants.

Childline Western Cape is marking its 30th anniversary by hosting a fundraising concert in March in Cape Town.
The organisation plans to raise more than R1.5 million to continue providing counselling, crisis intervention and support services to vulnerable children across the province.
The event, is titled Healing through the Arts: The Inaugural Concert.
Proceeds from ticket sales will support the organisation’s child protection programmes.
