Story 2
WordUnscrambler.pro analysed Google search data from January 1 to 17 December 2025, to identify words South Africans searched when unsure of spelling.
The study recorded “neighbour” in Mpumalanga, “business” in Limpopo, “honour” in the Northern Cape, “awkward” in the Eastern Cape, “favourite” in the Free State, “colour” in North West, “jewellery” in the Western Cape, “because” in Gauteng, and “reindeer” in KwaZulu-Natal.
The analysis shows that spelling uncertainty is linked to differences between British and American English and to irregular spelling patterns in commonly used words.
