SAB Invests R500m to support township and informal retailers

South African Breweries has invested R500m in supporting township and informal economy retailers since 2021, as part of its wider strategy to drive inclusive economic development across South Africa.

The milestone was celebrated at SAB’s Bryanston offices, through the Cheers to Retailers event, recognising the role of small retailers in sustaining South Africa’s value chain.

The sector contributes 1.4% to the national GDP, with 95% of SAB’s production inputs sourced locally.

Former Finance Minister Trevor Manuel has been appointed Chairman of the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Local Organising Committee Board.

The board was unveiled at Cricket South Africa's headquarters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

South Africa will co-host the 2027 World Cup with neighbours Zimbabwe and Namibia, in October and November 2027.

The new board has been tasked with delivering a world class event.

Eskom launches landmark renewable energy Offtake Programme

Eskom has announced the launch of its first Renewable Energy Offtake Programme, a milestone in the utility’s ongoing efforts to diversify South Africa’s energy mix and strengthen the integration of renewable power into the national grid.

the programme was introduced through a request for proposal and offers large power users the opportunity to procure 291MW of solar photo-voltaic energy.

Eskom distribution acting group executive Agnes Mlambo says the programme showcased the utility’s innovation in advancing the country's clean energy goals.

Eskom aims to develop 2GW of construction-ready renewable capacity by 2026.

Virgin Atlantic extends Cape Town–London route for 2025/26 season

British airline Virgin Atlantic will extend its Cape Town to London seasonal route for the 2025/26 period, adding more than 17,000 seats.

The service will operate from the 13th of October to the 19th of April 2026, with overnight flight times scheduled to allow same-day connections to US destinations.
The country manager for Virgin Atlantic in South Africa, Marc Harding, says they are proud to be enhancing their Cape Town service with an extended season and additional capacity.

The announcement follows the 2024/25 season and includes plans to maintain regular flights between Cape Town and London.
