The group focuses on assisting local retirement villages and organisations, often providing care packages during key times of the year, while also working with the Linden Community Policing Forum on initiatives such as fraud awareness for older residents.
Beyond outreach, members take part in monthly gatherings that include talks and creative workshops such as painting and needlework, aimed at encouraging social connection and lifelong learning.

Top 20 schools selected for national STEM innovation competition

Top performing schools across South Africa have been named in the Top 20 for the 2026 Solve for Tomorrow competition, a STEM initiative led by Samsung in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.
The programme challenges Grade 10 and 11 learners to develop innovative solutions to social and environmental problems using science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
This year’s competition received more than 140 entries from public schools nationwide, with selected teams now moving into a mentored phase that includes workshops, prototype development and access to digital tools.
Organisers say the initiative aims to strengthen critical thinking, creativity and problem solving skills while preparing learners for future careers in a digital economy.

Market Theatre Turns 50 In June

Market Theatre is marking its 50th anniversary this June, celebrating five decades since its founding in 1976 in Newtown.
Known as the “Theatre of the Struggle”, the venue gained global recognition during apartheid for staging non-racial productions that amplified marginalised voices.
A three-day celebration from 19 to 21 June will feature revived protest-era works and new productions, alongside a street festival and archival exhibition in the Newtown precinct.
The theatre remains a key cultural landmark in Johannesburg, reflecting the city’s history and ongoing creative scene.

Senqu Bridge unveiled in major SA and Lesotho water project milestone

The Senqu Bridge has been unveiled in Mokhotlong as part of Phase Two of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, marking progress in cooperation between South Africa and Lesotho.
Cyril Ramaphosa, Letsie III and Sam Matekane officiated the unveiling of the bridge, which improves access to key construction sites linked to the water transfer system.
The project is expected to strengthen water security for South Africa while supporting infrastructure development and job creation in Lesotho. President Ramaphosa lauded the lasting cooperation between the neighbouring countries
