Market Theatre is marking its 50th anniversary this June, celebrating five decades since its founding in 1976 in Newtown.
Known as the “Theatre of the Struggle”, the venue gained global recognition during apartheid for staging non-racial productions that amplified marginalised voices.
A three-day celebration from 19 to 21 June will feature revived protest-era works and new productions, alongside a street festival and archival exhibition in the Newtown precinct.

Cape Town swimmers take on 11km ocean challenge for turtle conservation

An 11km open water swim from Robben Island to Granger Bay is set to take place off the coast of Cape Town this weekend, with swimmers raising funds for endangered sea turtles.
The challenge supports the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre, which rescues and rehabilitates injured and stranded turtles along South Africa’s coastline before releasing them back into the ocean.
Organisers say the swim highlights both endurance in the water and the urgent need to protect marine life, with support going towards ongoing conservation and rehabilitation work

The Hands of Maraisburg initiative focused on an overgrown section along Millward Road and 6th Avenue, where volunteers cleared litter and dense vegetation around the perimeter of the nearby graveyard.
During the clean-up, the group also uncovered a leaking water pipe hidden behind the overgrowth, highlighting additional maintenance issues in the area.
