MARKET THEATRE TURNS 50
Story 1
Market Theatre is marking its 50th anniversary this June, celebrating five decades since its founding in 1976 in Newtown.
Known as the “Theatre of the Struggle”, the venue gained global recognition during apartheid for staging non-racial productions that amplified marginalised voices.
A three-day celebration from 19 to 21 June will feature revived protest-era works and new productions, alongside a street festival and archival exhibition in the Newtown precinct.
The theatre remains a key cultural landmark in Johannesburg, reflecting the city’s history and ongoing creative scene.
