Hlanzekile turns river plastic into school desks in Soweto

Hlanzekile River and Ocean Cleaning collects plastic waste from Johannesburg rivers and converts it into products, including school desks, in a Soweto workshop.
Since 2023, the group has removed over 17,000 kilograms of waste and processes it into items such as pens and furniture.
The project trains young people in recycling and manufacturing, reduces river pollution, and supplies schools.
Founder Floyd Nyai says waste can be reused to build solutions for local communities.

The International Hotel School, established in 1994, trains hospitality students across six campuses and online programmes, with graduates entering global hotel and tourism companies.

SA film God’s Work wins award at Luxor African Film Festival

The South African film God’s Work has won the Radwan El Kashef Prize at the Lax-saw African Film Festival in Egypt.
Directed by Michael James and produced by Sithabile Mkhize, the film follows a community of homeless men in Durban dealing with poverty and addiction, based on real experiences from the Denis Hurley Centre.
The award recognises films that combine storytelling with social themes about African life and identity.
