Shoprite invests R24 million to keep cabbage prices low
Story 2
Shoprite Group has invested R24 million to keep the price of cabbage affordable for South Africans struggling with the rising cost of living.
In its 2025 financial year, the retailer capped prices at R12.99 in Usave stores and R14.99 at Shoprite, saying some outlets even sell it for less.
Shoprite says it has been investing millions over the past two and a half years to ensure cabbage, a daily staple for many households, stays within reach.
The group says that even when its cost price rose to about R25 during the year, the capped prices remained in place.
General Manager for Fresh Foods, Quintin Paladin, says keeping cabbage affordable supports food security, dignity, and health for millions of South Africans.

Eastern Australian Humpback Whale Population Surpasses Pre-Whaling Levels
Story 3
The eastern Australian humpback whale population has rebounded to more than 50,000, exceeding numbers before commercial whaling.
In the early 1960s, only about 150 whales remained after decades of hunting.
A 1963 ban on commercial whaling allowed the population to recover over the following decades.
The latest estimates come from research by scientists, whale-watching operators, and citizen contributors via the HappyWhale database.
Experts say the population may now be approaching the ecosystem’s carrying capacity, but the recovery represents a major conservation success for Australia’s marine environment.
