Niger has become the first African country to eliminate onchocerciasis, or river blindness. Four decades of Ivermectin distribution through the Mectizan Donation Program made this possible.
The program also helped eradicate lymphatic filariasis. Strong leadership and cross-border partnerships reached communities along the Niger River.
The success shows that even low-income countries can achieve major health victories with simple strategies and effective medicines.
Senegal is now moving into a monitoring phase, following Niger’s example.
