Unisa Chancellor’s Calabash Awards honour distinguished South Africans

The University of South Africa's Chancellor,
former President Thabo Mbeki, has honoured nine outstanding South Africans and Unisa alumni at the Chancellor's Calabash Awards which were held at the Sandton Hotel in Johannesburg.

The Awards recognise excellence and exemplary achievements of South Africans who have contributed significantly to shaping futures in the service of humanity.

The Outstanding Alumna Award was presented to renowned artist Yvonne ‘Chaka Chaka’ Mhinga, recognising her role as an advocate for global health and social justice.

Tourism Department launches Smart Visitor Information Centre at OR Tambo Airport

The Tourism Department in collaboration with the Airports Company South Africa and several other tourism sectors, have launched a Smart Visitor Information Centre at the OR Tambo International Airport.

The interactive, paperless centre offers real-time information on the country's culture and heritage offerings across all nine South African provinces.

Tourists arriving at the premier international Airport will now have a digital index of the country’s tourism offering at their fingertips.

Eskom launches 14,000km transmission lines to boost SA's Power Supply

Eskom has announced an ambitious plan to expand its electricity infrastructure by constructing 14,000 kilometres of new transmission lines.

This is part of a wider Integrated Resource Plan aimed at diversifying the grid and providing stable, reliable power.

Ramokgopa says nuclear energy will play a critical and expanded role in the country's power generation mix.

Eskom has successfully been granted licence extensions for both Unit One and Unit Two of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

The move allows the only nuclear plant in the country to continue operations for an additional 20 years - with Unit One now licensed until 2044 and Unit Two until 2045.

Africa to host inaugural World Chess Championship

The Wold's biggest chess Championships will be making their way to the Westcoast next month,
marking the first Grand Slam event to be hosted in Africa.

The World's best grand masters will compete for the title and honour of being crowned the freestyle test champion from the 8th of December in the Western Cape.

More than 20 chess clubs from Cape Town will be involved in celebrating and promoting the tournament, with public viewing sessions and live commentary planned in the city during the event.

The event will not only bring world-class competition to local shores but also highlight SA’s growing chess culture.
