Alexandra container libraries boost reading access
Story 2
Five container-based libraries in Alexandra, Johannesburg are giving primary school learners daily access to reading spaces in communities where national studies show many Grade 4 pupils struggle with reading for meaning.
Set up by Breadline Africa, the libraries operate in five schools and serve thousands of learners each week, with teachers and parents supporting reading sessions, book lending and literacy activities.
At schools such as Skeen Primary and Ekukhanyisweni Primary, learners use the spaces to build reading skills, with some advancing to scholarships and further learning opportunities.
The programme continues despite limited books and language challenges, with regular use helping to strengthen early literacy in the area.
