Up to 40 children are set to receive free cleft lip and palate surgeries in Johannesburg during a special programme hosted by Operation Smile South Africa and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital later this month.
The three day initiative aims to help reduce Gauteng’s cleft surgery backlog while also supporting the training of young medical specialists.
Around 50 volunteer healthcare professionals, including surgeons, nurses and speech therapists, will take part in the programme from 29 to 31 May.
This year also marks 20 years of Operation Smile South Africa providing free cleft surgeries and care across the region.

SA Garden Wins Best in Show at Chelsea Flower Show
Teaser / Tailpiece story
South Africa has won gold and Best in Show at the Chelsea Flower Show in London with a garden inspired by life after wildfires in the Fynbos biome.
The award winning display, led by Leon Kluge, featured burnt Protea structures, indigenous plants and flowing water elements to show how nature recovers after fire.
Heavy rain in the Western Cape and flight disruptions nearly prevented the flowers from reaching the United Kingdom, but the team managed to complete the exhibit in time.
The garden will now be recreated in Stanford in the Western Cape in September.
