Melville Koppies smelter gets AR upgrade
Story 2
The Melville Koppies smelter has received a tech upgrade as the University of Johannesburg launches an augmented reality experience at the site.
Visitors can now use smartphones and QR codes at the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve to view a 3D reconstruction of a 500-year-old iron smelter over the existing ruins.
The system overlays digital models onto the site to show how the smelting operation would have looked in the past.
The project aims to use digital technology to help present and interpret the heritage site on location.
