South Africa named Berlinale focus country

South Africa has been named the European Film Market’s “Country in Focus” for the 2027 Berlinale in Germany.
The selection will place South African filmmakers, producers and studios at one of the world’s biggest film industry events from the 10th to the 16th of February next year.
The programme aims to attract international partnerships, investment and co-production opportunities for the local film industry.
South Africa has a long history with the film festival, including U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, which won the Golden Bear award in 2005.

Nelson Mandela Foundation names marathon ambassadors

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has unveiled ambassadors for the Mandela Marathon.
They include Kenyan marathon legend Catherine Ndereba, former world record holder Paul Tergat, South African long-distance champion Prudence Seokgodiso and former New York City and Mumbai Marathon winner Hendrick Ramaala.
The event on 18 October in Cape Town will feature five, ten, 21 and 42-point-two-kilometre races.
Organisers say the marathon promotes Madiba’s values of unity and social justice.

Midlands community knits and donates blankets

A Midlands community in KwaZulu-Natal has knitted and donated 318 blankets for people in need through an initiative led by Piggly Wiggly Country Village.
Knitters met weekly at the coffee shop over several months to create blanket squares, with some continuing work at home.
The blankets were showcased earlier this month during a community event where residents gathered to view the finished work.
The blankets will now be distributed to support people requiring warmth across the region.

SAFA Head of Women's Football Dawn Lubisi says the strong turnout at Kaizer Chiefs Women’s first official Gauteng Women’s Provincial League match against Mamelodi Sundowns shows growing support for women’s football in South Africa.
The match took place on Sunday at Tsakane Stadium, where Chiefs made their league debut and lost 2–0 to Sundowns.
A large crowd filled the venue, with Lubisi pointing to the attendance as evidence of increasing public interest and potential for greater investment in the women’s game.
Kaizer Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung says the debut against an established Sundowns side marked an important step for the club in women’s football:
