Soweto Book Café Blossoms into a Thriving Community Space with Over 10,000 Books
Story 1
Thami Mazibuko, owner of the Soweto Book Café in Zondi, Soweto, has grown his collection to over 10,000 books. What started with small donations expanded significantly after the family of the late scientist John Crawford donated his entire book collection.
The café has become much more than a bookstore — it’s now a library, learning hub, and safe space where schoolchildren come to read, do homework, and play games like chess. Mazibuko also helps visitors develop reading and digital skills.
Once considered a dangerous area, Zondi has seen positive change because of the café, which hosts book fairs, festivals, and workshops.
Mazibuko hopes to secure funding to keep this vital cultural space thriving for the community.

Addo Elephant Park Expands with Landmark Elephant Move
Story 2
In a major win for conservation, 42 elephants have been safely relocated to the Kabouga section of Addo Elephant National Park near Gqeberha. The move gives the animals more space and helps restore nature’s balance in the area.

Elephants play a key role in shaping ecosystems, and their return will support the recovery of plants and wildlife where they’ve been missing for years.

Conservation Manager Anban Padayakee praised the expert planning that kept the elephants calm and safe, while Park Manager Roland Januarie called it a proud moment for elephant conservation in South Africa.
