A doctor from Mabopane is making strides in cancer treatment and care. Dr Louisa Dlamini was inspired to specialise in oncology after seeing long queues of patients waiting for treatment at Jubilee Hospital.

Azraa Ebrahim, a blind student from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, has graduated cum laude, achieving an incredible 14 distinctions.
Born with congenital bilateral optic nerve atrophy, Azraa can only see shapes and shadows, but that didn’t stop her from excelling academically.
Starting her studies during the Covid-19 pandemic, Azraa struggled with online learning but praised UKZN’s disability unit for their support throughout her journey.
She majored in religious studies and industrial psychology and became a motivational speaker, inspiring many with her story.
Azraa’s determination and hard work paid off, earning her accolades for best student presentations alongside postgraduate students.
She says her achievement still feels surreal but is proud to show that disability is no barrier to success.

Houdini the Rhino Breathes Easy After Life-Saving Surgery by UP Veterinary Team

A white rhino named Houdini is breathing freely again after a complex six-hour surgery performed by a specialist veterinary team from the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science.
The four-year-old rhino, a survivor of a poaching attack, suffered a severe nasal blockage caused by an old gunshot wound.
Led by Professor Gerhard Steenkamp and supported by experts including Dr Elza Hollenbach and Dr Pierre Bester, the UP team used advanced surgical and anaesthetic techniques—some never before attempted on rhinos—to restore Houdini’s ability to breathe through his nose, critical for his survival.
Thanks to their groundbreaking work, Houdini is now recovering well and set to return home, marking a remarkable success for South African veterinary science and wildlife conservation.
