UKZN Karatekas Secure Historic Silver at FISU Combat Games

Two University of KwaZulu-Natal students, Dhruv Heeralal and Sohail Ramruthan, have won silver medals at the International University Sports Federation World University Championship Combat Games in Brazil.
The pair became the first South African duo to secure a silver medal in the team Kata division at the tournament.
Competing against international athletes across combat sports disciplines, the students balanced their studies with intensive training to reach the podium. They had earlier qualified after winning gold at the University Sport South Africa tournament.
University officials have praised the achievement as a proud moment for both UKZN and South African sport.

The initiative was announced at the 125th Graduation Anniversary Memorial Lecture of Charlotte Maxeke in Johannesburg.
Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela says the fund brings together public and private sector support to help students complete their studies.
He says it continues Charlotte Maxeke’s legacy by expanding access to education for women in South Africa.
The fund will provide financial assistance aimed at improving student retention at universities.
