Sandton volunteer to climb Africa’s highest peak to support SPCA
Story 1
A Sandton SPCA volunteer is preparing to climb the highest mountain in Northern Africa to raise funds for the organisation.
Vicky, who volunteers at the Sandton SPCA, will travel to Morocco in March to take on Mount Toubkal as part of an expedition organised by the non-profit adventure group Kusudi La.
The climb aims to raise money towards a new vehicle for the Sandton SPCA, which is used in animal rescues, rehoming efforts and community outreach.
Vicky says she chose the Sandton SPCA because she volunteers there and has adopted all of her pets from the organisation.
The fundraiser forms part of a broader effort to support animal welfare services in the Sandton community.

Young white rhino calf settles in at Zululand Conservation Trust after rescue
Story 2
A young white rhino calf, rescued after being found alone in the wild following the loss of his mother, is settling in at the Zululand Conservation Trust orphanage in KwaZulu-Natal. The calf, weighing just over 300 kilograms, underwent a full veterinary check-up and was placed in a secure crate to rest after his journey.
Caretakers used temporary measures, including a blindfold and earplugs, to reduce stress, and have begun gradually removing them as he adjusts. Staff report the calf is responding well, gaining confidence and adapting to his new surroundings.
The Trust says the calf’s progress is part of its ongoing work to protect and care for vulnerable wildlife in South Africa.

NASA’s Artemis II mission to circle the Moon next month
Teaser / Tailpiece story
NASA’s Artemis II mission is set to lift off next month, sending astronauts on a crewed flight around the Moon.
The mission will orbit the Moon, testing key technology and gathering data ahead of Artemis III, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface in 2027 or 2028. It will be the first crewed lunar mission since Apollo 17 in 1972.
The Artemis programme is a major step toward future missions to Mars. NASA says the mission is critical to preparing for long-term human exploration beyond Earth.
South Africa’s National Space Agency’s Tiaan Strydom says the Moon could act as a testing ground and launch point for deeper space travel, and could even provide water and oxygen.
