RKC Dojo celebrates 10 years
The Ryu Ken Chi (RKC) Dojo marked a major milestone in 2025, celebrating 10 years since its opening. The Rivonia Kendo Club is at the Rivonia Sports Club in Paulshof. What started in February 2015 as a small kendo group has grown into South Africa’s largest kendo dojo.The club offers kendo, ee-eye-doh, and jodo at two Johannesburg locations.The anniversary year highlighted the dojo’s journey, including moments of pride and challenges. A standout achievement was the dojo’s representation of South Africa’s national teams at three European championships.

SA vs Angola in AFCON Opener
South Africa and Angola are going head to head in a Southern Africa derby as they open Group B of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this afternoon. It is their fifth AFCON meeting in the group stages. Hyde Park Precinct launches
The Hyde Park Precinct has officially launched, bringing coordinated cleaning, security, and beautification to Jan Smuts Avenue. Launched in November 2025, teams now tackle daily challenges along the busy corridor. Cleaning crews remove litter, weeds, and illegal posters Monday to Friday, while security services improve safety. In partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, the project also maintains the median islands with seasonal flowers, keeping the area neat and visually appealing.

Giant lanterns light up Philippines
Thousands of spectators gathered in San Fernando in the Philippines as towering hand-crafted lanterns lit up the night sky during the annual Giant Lantern Festival. Held each December, the festival features six-metre-high lanterns glowing with religious and festive imagery, set to Filipino rap and Christmas carols. The event celebrates the region’s lantern-making tradition, which dates back more than a century. Local designer Karl Quiwa said it takes a team of 20 people about three months to complete a single display. Each massive structure can weigh up to a tonne and cost as much as one million pesos.
