SA shines at global science event

South Africa’s young scientists have earned top honours at the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad in Bali, Indonesia. Eskom Expo Executive Director Parthy Chetty commended the four researchers for their outstanding achievements. Albertus van Niekerk secured a gold medal and a prestigious grand award for his study on using lavender oil as an eco-friendly fungicide for citrus farming. Ismaail Hassen also took gold for developing a wearable navigation device for visually impaired people. Silver medals were awarded to Milla Vorster for her work in 3D bioprinting and to Dzunisa Chauke for a project focused on detecting artificial intelligence-generated audio.

Ancient dinosaur tracks found in Italian Alps

Italian paleontologists have uncovered thousands of dinosaur footprints on a near-vertical rock face more than 2,000 metres above sea level in the Stelvio National Park in Italy. Experts say this discovery is among the world's richest sites for the Triassic period. The tracks, some up to 40 cm wide and showing claw marks, stretch for about five kilometres. Located in the high-altitude glayshl (Va leh di FRAH-eh-leh.) near Bormio is one of the venues for the 2026 Winter Olympics in the northern region of Lombardy. Paleontologist Cristiano Dal Sasso says the area is one of the largest and oldest footprint sites in Italy, and among the most spectacular.
