Father and son make history as rival trainers in SA boxing
Story 1
Shannon Strydom and his father, Gert Strydom, will face off in a first for South African boxing on Saturday at Carnival City, Brakpan.
Shannon trains Chris Thompson, who aims to reclaim the national heavyweight belt, while Gert guides defending champion Shaun Potgieter.
The venue is familiar to Shannon, who watched his first professional fight there at age seven.
Dubbed “Fire and Ice,” the 12-round bout will mark the first time a father and son have opposed each other in different corners in a professional SA fight.
The card also features a mini flyweight clash between former gym-mates Siyamthanda Wophela and Sabelo Nkosi, with action starting at 7pm.

Urban nest boxes aim to save endangered yellow-crested cockatoos
Story 3
In Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay, urban animal habitat designer Harry Wong is installing artificial nest boxes to help protect the endangered yellow-crested cockatoo.
With only 1,200 to 2,000 left worldwide, about a tenth of the population lives in Hong Kong, one of the largest remaining wild populations.
The birds rely on natural tree cavities to breed, but typhoons and pruning have destroyed around 80 percent of suitable nesting sites.
The initiative aims to provide safe breeding spaces and boost juvenile numbers, supporting the species’ survival amid habitat loss and illegal trade pressures.
