Wilro Lions hosts cancer awareness high tea

The Lions Club of Wilro Park hosted its annual cancer awareness high tea on October 11, bringing the community together for a vital cause.
Sixty-two guests attended the event, featuring educational talks, reflection, and hope. Each of the nine tables represented a different type of cancer, reflecting the theme, ‘Rainbow of Hope’.
Professor Marianne from Wits University delivered the keynote on cancer causes, detection, and prevention.
Care bags were handed to CANSA for children with cancer, and fundraising also supported Nico Botha, a young boy battling Ewing sarcoma.
Held in memory of former club member Marlene Lepley, the event continues to emphasise early detection, awareness, and community support.

Over 900,000 Matriculants Set to Begin Final Exams on Tuesday

South Africa is gearing up for one of its largest exam operations as more than 900,000 candidates prepare to write the 2025 National Senior Certificate exams.
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube says the department is fully ready, with strong security and oversight in place across nearly 7,000 centres.
Learners have received extra support through revision camps and study materials to boost their confidence.
Gwarube says the integrity of the exams remains a top priority and that learners’ mental well-being is also being supported.
The exams will run until 27 November, with marking to begin in early December.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has discharged its last Ebola patient, signalling a major step towards ending the recent outbreak.
If no new cases are reported during the next 42 days, the outbreak can be officially declared over.
Since it began on 4 September in Kasai Province, 64 cases were recorded, with 19 patients recovering.
The World Health Organization praised the swift response, highlighting strong partnerships, national expertise, and determination in protecting lives and containing the virus.
