Wits University brings water to informal settlements

Wits University, in partnership with Johannesburg Water, has launched a groundwater project to provide a reliable water supply to informal settlements in Region G.
The system will deliver 150 to 225 litres per person per day to over 2,600 residents, with automated monitoring, ample storage, and rapid response to ensure uninterrupted service.
Researchers will monitor the system for two years to ensure long-term sustainability. Wits Enterprise CEO Andrew Hope-Jones said the project connects academic innovation with practical community solutions, while Johannesburg Water highlighted its commitment to dignity and development through sustainable infrastructure.
The system is expected to be fully operational by December 2025.

2026 Australian Firefighters Calendar Launch Supports Wildlife and First Responders

The 2026 Australian Firefighters Calendar has been released, raising funds for wildlife conservation and the wellbeing of first responders.
Now in its 33rd year, the annual calendar features firefighters in action alongside rescued animals, with five editions including Dog, Cat, Horse, Mixed Animal, and Hero.
Proceeds from the calendar support organisations such as the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, South Australian Native Animal Rescue, Kids With Cancer Foundation, and Safe Haven Animal Rescue.
The initiative aims to provide funding for animal rehabilitation, disaster recovery, and mental health support for firefighters.
