TUT Introduces Sign Language Interpreting at Spring Graduations
Story 1
The Tshwane University of Technology has introduced sign language interpreting for the first time at its spring graduation ceremonies on 15 and 16 October 2025.
The move ensures students and guests who are deaf or hard of hearing can fully participate in the university’s milestone events. Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr Emily Mabote praised graduates for their resilience and determination.
Prof Tebogo Rakgogo said the inclusion of South African Sign Language is a visible step toward equality, following its recognition as the country’s 12th official language in 2023.
Senior Director Dr Mumthaz Banoobhai added the initiative removes barriers, builds confidence, and promotes awareness among hearing attendees.
TUT says the step goes beyond symbolism, creating a more inclusive environment that honours all graduates’ achievements.
