World’s Largest Marine Sanctuary to Protect Atlantic Whales and Dolphins
Story 3
A new marine sanctuary, “Macronesia,” will protect 32 species of whales and dolphins along key migratory routes in the northeastern Atlantic, covering waters around the Azores, Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, and Madeira.
The resolution passed with 96.5% support at last month’s IUCN World Conservation Congress. Canarian NGO Loro Parque Fundación, led by Wolfgang Kiessling, spearheaded the initiative.
The sanctuary aims to shield whales from fishing gear, ship strikes, noise pollution, and deep-sea mining, though enforcement and funding are still being planned.
