Nine-year-old donates birthday gifts to help moms and babies

Nine-year-old Giorgia Bemelman from Cape Town celebrated her birthday by giving back to the community.
She asked friends to bring nappies, baby essentials, and gift vouchers instead of presents, and donated them to Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital.
The items went to families supported by Footprints 4 Sam, a charity providing comfort and dignity to vulnerable children and caregivers.
Giorgia personally delivered the donations to the Kangaroo Mother Care Ward and Ward 1, helping support premature and fragile infants.
The charity praised her as a powerful example of compassion, showing that generosity knows no age.

Community effort saves family-run cobbler

A family-run cobbler shop has been spared from corporate competition thanks to strong local support.
Macdonald Traditional Cobbler, run by Alan Macdonald and part of a family business dating back to his grandfather in Glasgow, faced a planned Tesco and Timpson service centre across the street.
Villager Gemma Surman started a petition that gathered 1,000 signatures, including backing from the local MP, while around 80 other objections were submitted.
Tesco has confirmed it will not move forward with the application. Macdonald thanked the community for protecting his livelihood and ensuring the shop remains a part of local life.
