Mawana elephant herd given vital protection in KwaZulu-Natal
Story 2
The roaming Mawana elephant herd in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been secured in an 8,300-hectare area at Loziba Wildlife Reserve, with a 66-kilometre perimeter fence and satellite-tracked virtual monitoring.
The herd previously came into contact with neighbouring communities, including incidents of property damage and a herdsman being attacked in March 2024.
A collaborative effort by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife, Humane World for Animals, and local partners introduced non-lethal solutions such as fertility control, community engagement, and real-time tracking to ensure safety for both the elephants and residents.
The herd was safely moved into the reserve by 10 November 2025, showing how science and cooperation can support human-wildlife coexistence.

Ancient Timbuktu manuscripts return home after years in exile
Story 3
Thousands of ancient Arabic texts have returned to Timbuktu, Mali, after being safeguarded in the south of the country during a period of conflict.
The manuscripts, some adorned with gold leaf, cover topics from medicine and astronomy to legal debates and historical chronicles of West African empires.
The texts were smuggled to Bamako in 2012 to protect them from insurgents, and most have now been brought back to the Ahmed Baba Institute, where they are preserved, studied, and digitized.
The institute also trains specialists in handling and archiving the manuscripts, ensuring the knowledge is passed to future generations. Their return marks a major step in safeguarding Timbuktu’s centuries-old scholarly heritage.
