Alexandra container libraries boost learner reading
Story 1
Five school libraries in Alexandra, Johannesburg, built from converted shipping containers by Breadline Africa, are giving learners safe, welcoming spaces to read, borrow books and take part in reading activities.
For many children, these libraries are their first regular access to books, helping them build confidence in reading and improving skills in communities where literacy levels are low.
Teachers and families say the spaces are changing daily learning habits, with some learners already progressing to scholarships and new opportunities beyond their schools.
