Tiny Turtle Kai Returns to Ocean After Six Year Survival Journey
A tiny loggerhead turtle named Kai has been released back into the ocean off the Western Cape after nearly six years of rehabilitation at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.
Kai was rescued as a hatchling in 2020 weighing just 53 grams and struggling with serious buoyancy issues that made survival in the wild impossible. Over the years, specialist care, medical treatment and a custom buoyancy device helped him recover and build the strength needed to return to the sea.
The release took place at the De Hoop Marine Protected Area, where conservation teams and partners gathered to watch him swim back into the wild.
