Wits honours pioneering cardiologist with honorary doctorate

Wits University has awarded 94 year old Professor Kubedi Patrick Mokhobo an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine in recognition of his lifelong contribution to healthcare and medical education.
Professor Mokhobo became southern Africa's first Black cardiologist after overcoming barriers during apartheid and went on to strengthen healthcare in South Africa, Eswatini and Lesotho through his work as a doctor, educator and health leader.
Accepting the honour, Professor Mokhobo encouraged graduates to use their skills to help build a stronger South Africa.

The University of Limpopo has trained teachers to recognise early signs of vision problems in learners so they can be referred for professional eye examinations before their learning is affected.
Teachers learnt to identify warning signs such as squinting, frequent headaches and difficulty reading from the classroom board, helping learners get the support they need sooner.
The initiative strengthens early detection in schools and supports better health and learning outcomes for children.

Rooibos seeds set for space mission to inspire young scientists

Learners from seven Cederberg schools will take part in a unique science experiment to see how travelling to space affects the growth of rooibos seeds.
The seeds will be sent to the International Space Station before learners compare them with seeds that remained on Earth, collecting data on germination, growth and resilience.
The project will give learners hands on experience in space science, agriculture and research while encouraging future careers in science and technology.’
