Phoenix officers buy school shoes for pupils turned away
Story 1
Two Phoenix SAPS officers have bought school shoes for two Grade 2 pupils who were turned away from school because they did not have the required footwear.
Sergeant Gonaseelan and Constable Maharaj were on patrol in the Phoenix area when they came across a mother and her two children outside a school.
The woman told officers the school could not admit the pupils without school shoes and she was forced to take them home on the first day of the academic year.
The officers then purchased two pairs of shoes from a nearby store and took the family back to the school.
The children were later allowed to return to class.
SAPS says the incident reflects the role of police officers in supporting the communities they serve.

New squash series gives SA players home ranking opportunities
Teaser / Tailpiece story
An 11 tournament squash series backed by Assore will be staged in South Africa this year, allowing local players to earn PSA world ranking points at home without the usual travel costs.
The series will feature multiple events, including satellite and higher level tournaments, as well as junior and U23 competitions to support players at different levels.
Organisers say this domestic circuit will help South African players develop their skills and rankings more affordably, with an eye on larger international events and the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Squash SA president Blaar Coetzee says this will elevate the players game.
