Bursary Programme Helps Alexandra Learners Excel in Matric Exams
Story 1
The Alexandra Education Committee’s bursary programme has helped 48 learners from Alexandra and nearby communities achieve a 100% pass rate in the 2025 matric exams, including a 100% Bachelor’s pass rate and 104 distinctions.
The programme supports academically gifted learners from under-resourced schools with tuition, transport, uniforms, extra lessons, mentorship, and career guidance.
AEC director Paul Channon said the results reflect the learners’ hard work and resilience, particularly given the challenges faced in township schools.

Anna Brom to Ride Cape Epic for Rural Education
Story 2
Anna Brom, founder of the Anna Foundation, will ride the 2026 Absa Cape Epic to mark 20 years of supporting rural education. The race spans 692 kilometres over eight days and is one of the toughest mountain bike events in the world.
She will ride alongside her husband and the Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer, Pierre-Henri Olivier. Anna says her goal is to inspire the children supported by the Foundation and raise awareness for rural education.
Training began soon after securing her entry late last year, and she says the mental challenge may be as tough as the physical. Supporters can sponsor kilometres at R100 each, with funds going directly to the Foundation’s work with rural learners.

Deputy principal Hlamalani Macevele said the support was important for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and would encourage them to engage fully in their studies.
AKAO founder Simangele Nxumalo said the drive aimed to prevent learners from starting the year feeling left out due to a lack of resources.

Presumed extinct plant rediscovered in Queensland Outback
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A plant once believed to be extinct has been rediscovered in northern Queensland after a photo was uploaded to the citizen science platform iNaturalist.
The small flowering shrub, Ptilotus senarius, had not been recorded since 1967. While working on a remote outback station, horticulturalist Aaron Bean photographed a plant he found unusual and later uploaded the images online.
Botanists at the Queensland Herbarium confirmed it was the long-lost species. Scientists say the find shows the growing role of citizen science platforms, which now host hundreds of millions of wildlife observations worldwide.
