Abandoned ducklings rescued in Waterfall
Story 1
A group of abandoned ducklings in Waterfall were rescued after Midrand SPCA inspectors and local residents worked together.
Concerned resident Shohan Mootheeram alerted the SPCA after the ducklings had been alone for four days. Mootheeram paddled onto a local dam to herd the ducklings toward safety, while SPCA inspectors carefully captured them.
The ducklings were taken to Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary, where they were examined, fed, and made comfortable.
The SPCA said the coordinated effort by community members and veterinary staff ensured the young birds were rescued safely, showing how swift action can protect vulnerable animals

Blairgowrie water upgrade improves reliability and sustainability
Story 3
Joburg Water has completed a major pipe replacement project in Blairgowrie, as part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure renewal programme.
The project replaced aging asbestos cement pipes with modern, corrosion-resistant MPVC pipes, which are more durable, safer, and easier to maintain.
The 750-metre upgrade also included the installation of fire hydrants, valves, and domestic water meters, aiming to improve reliability, reduce leaks and bursts, and enhance water pressure for households and businesses.
Johannesburg Water says the project will also support long-term sustainability, helping preserve the city’s water resources while lowering emergency repair costs.

Nairobi man rescues injured birds across the city
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A Kenyan man, Rodgers Oloo Magutha, known as the “Nairobi Birdman,” is caring for injured birds across the capital. His rescues include pigeons, storks, owls, and other wild birds harmed by urban hazards such as powerlines, cars, and windows.
He relies on donations to feed and care for the birds and releases them once they are healthy enough to return to the wild. Magutha hopes to open a legal, fully equipped bird rescue center in the future.
Magutha grew up near Lake Nakuru National Park, where his interest in birds began as a child.
