Alberton resident Matt Smith was invited to join the global broadcast team at Dakar 2026, marking a significant milestone for the voice of South African Rally Raid.
Smith said the opportunity followed years of preparation and a defining moment at the South African Safari Rally.
He reflected on a journey that began in local motorsport circles and culminated on one of the world’s biggest stages.
Smith described the assignment as one of the most demanding and prestigious roles in international motorsport, adding that being the voice of Dakar required preparation, neutrality and the ability to tell compelling stories under pressure.
South Africa’s footprint at Dakar continues to grow, with approximately 30% of cars entered developed and manufactured locally, and a strong contingent of South African crews competing across categories.

Black Coffee Foundation launches nationwide eye-testing programme for schoolchildren

The Black Coffee Foundation has launched a nationwide eye-testing programme aimed at improving access to eye care for schoolchildren across South Africa.
The “Gift of Sight by Black Coffee” initiative began on the 9th of February at Thabisang Primary School in Soweto, where more than 700 pupils received vision screening during a school uniform handover.
Learners who needed further care received full eye exams and free spectacles at follow-up visits.
Children who are in need of advanced treatment will be referred to specialists through partner organisations.
The programme which aims to tackle vision problems that often affect children’s learning and development, will be rolled out to schools in other provinces, following the Gauteng launch.
The initiative is run in partnership with Vision Works Benmore, Morningside Eye, the South African Optometric Association and EyeCare4Kids, with sponsorship support from Love Maison33 and JHB VIP.
