Multimedia community project to celebrate Cape Town’s house music legacy
Story 3
A new community-driven multimedia project aims to document Cape Town’s 1990s and early 2000s house music scene through an exhibition and audio-visual material.
The Politics of Dancing seeks to capture memories, experiences and community heritage, with plans for a potential exhibition launch in September this year.
The project was conceived by documentary filmmaker Colin Macrae who was part of the original house music movement and aims is to explore how the house music scene helped to bring people together in a newly democratic South Africa, creating spaces of identity, freedom, belonging and social mixing.
The multimedia project is now being developed as an exhibition and a community archive.
Macrae is calling on the public to submit flyers, photographs, record sleeves and written memories from the era.
