Women in Science Awards Inspire Next Generation

The 2026 South African Women in Science Awards have recognised female researchers and students for their contributions to science, technology and innovation.
The awards were held on Thursday evening at the NH Johannesburg, Sandton Hotel, under the theme Placing Women at the Centre of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Researchers were recognised across fields including natural sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences, as well as public engagement with science.
DSTI Deputy Director Maphuti Madiga says the initiative aims to increase the visibility of women in science and inspire younger women to pursue careers in the sector.

South African Academic Makes History With Einstein Fellowship

Stellenbosch University academic Delecia Davids has made history as the first South African selected for the prestigious Einstein Fellowship in Germany.
The fully funded programme is awarded to one young academic each year, giving them the opportunity to explore research beyond their usual field.
Davids will live and work at Albert Einstein’s former summer home in Caputh, where she will research memory, identity and the family histories of coloured South Africans.
Her work will involve tracing the stories of ten families across generations, while exploring how communities understand their past.

Rescue dogs look for forever homes at Fourways adoption day

Animal lovers in Fourways will have a chance to meet rescue dogs looking for new homes at Woodrock Animal Rescue’s Market and Adoption Day in October.
The family friendly event will feature local market stalls, food and handmade goods, while visitors can meet dogs from Woodrock and learn more about adoption.
The event will also collect donations including pet food, blankets, towels, leashes and cleaning supplies for animals in the organisation’s care.
It takes place on Saturday, 31 October from 9am to 2pm at Fourways Crossing Bark Park.
The family friendly event will feature local market stalls, food and handmade goods, while visitors can meet dogs from Woodrock and learn more about adoption.
