City of Joburg wins engineering awards for infrastructure projects

The City of Johannesburg has received engineering awards for three infrastructure projects recognised by the Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa.
The awarded projects include the Eastern Stormwater Channel upgrade in Orange Grove, the Vlakfontein Transport Facility---- and the Naledi Clinic, all delivered by the Johannesburg Development Agency.
The projects were recognised for flood management, community development and healthcare infrastructure improvements.
The City says the awards reflect work completed under its infrastructure programme to improve service delivery across Johannesburg.

Six-month residency trains young African audio storytellers

Young creatives across Africa have an opportunity to develop audio storytelling skills through a new six-month residency programme.
An international audio storytelling organisation, RESONATE, is inviting applications for its Story Lab Africa Otherwise initiative.
The programme is open to journalists, podcasters, filmmakers and sound artists aged 18 to 35, with no prior audio experience required.
Participants will attend a workshop in Johannesburg from August, followed by five months of remote story development, with final works showcased at a festival in Cape Town.

SmartStart wins $2m Skoll Award

SmartStart has secured a $2 million Skoll Award for Social Innovation to expand early childhood programmes in South Africa.
The organisation trains low-income workers to run early learning centres from homes and community spaces, providing materials, coaching and support.
It currently supports more than 15,000 programmes, reaching about 160,000 children each week, while over one million young children still lack access to early learning.
The award will be presented at the Skoll World Forum in Oxford from 21 to 24 April 2026.
