A 54-year-old chimpanzee named Pierre has regained functional sight after undergoing successful cataract surgery at Chimp Haven in the United States, the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary. Pierre had become completely blind as his cataracts worsened. Before his surgery, staff used positive-reinforcement training to teach Pierre to cooperate with eye care, including presenting his eyes for treatment and allowing staff to administer eye drops.Veterinary ophthalmologist Dr Kenneth Pierce removed the cataracts from both eyes, with results becoming noticeable within hours.
Pierre has been given back something that dramatically improves his quality of life — his sight. The patience and care shown by his caregivers, combined with specialised veterinary treatment, helped him reconnect with the people, friends and activities he knows and loves.
