Chinese And American Museums Collaborate To Preserve Ancient Mural
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Chinese artists and conservationists have recreated a 15-metre-long, 700-year-old Buddhist mural housed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Led by Zhang Jian of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, the team spent three years producing a life-sized replica, carefully reproducing the mural’s faded colours, cracks and previous restoration work.
Their detailed study also helped correct historical inaccuracies in the mural’s arrangement, giving researchers a better understanding of how the artwork was originally displayed.
