City of Joburg starts allocating stalls and issuing smart cards to registered street traders

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the city has started allocating stalls and issuing smart cards to registered street traders in the inner city.
Morero says the multidisciplinary team deployed for the verification process had been working every day, including weekends, since earlier this month.
He says they have onboarded many traders, verified their documentation and issued the first group with permits.
Stall allocations have also commenced in markets where space is immediately available.More than 450 volunteers have joined Mellon Educate’s 2025 Building Blitz earlier this week, in a major push to confront South Africa’s deepening literacy crisis.
With most Grade-4 learners unable to read for meaning, the initiative is transforming classrooms and creating dedicated literacy hubs in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department.
