Campaign in Alexandra raises HIV awareness ahead of World AIDS Day
Story 1
The City of Johannesburg, together with NGOs including Uncedolwabantu, hosted an outreach event in Alexandra to promote HIV testing, treatment awareness, and education ahead of World AIDS Day on December 1.
The campaign forms part of the national Close the Gap initiative, aiming to reach people living with HIV, encourage those on treatment to continue, and support those who do not yet know their status.
The programme also focuses on sexual health and aims to educate young people about safe sexual practices and HIV prevention, including PrEP.
Organisers emphasised the importance of providing the community with the information and resources needed to stay safe and healthy.

Local heroes tackle Wines2Whales to support St Joseph’s Paediatric Care
Story 2
Two City of Cape Town employees, Regan Bagley and Jermaine Carelse, completed the three-day Wines2Whales mountain biking race this month to raise funds for St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care.
The 175-bed facility provides free transitional care to children with chronic conditions, bridging the gap between hospital and home.
Bagley, with a background in law enforcement, and Carelse, a firefighter, faced tough climbs, rugged trails, and accidents during the race, but said their challenges were small compared to those of the young patients.
Their effort forms part of a broader City initiative, which in October saw over 500 staff participate in a 5km fun run to support St Joseph’s.
All proceeds go directly to the facility, demonstrating the dedication of staff and the community’s commitment to vulnerable children in the Western Cape.

Ghana scraps mining tax to boost investment and production
Story 3
Ghana is set to remove a 25-year-old VAT on mineral exploration to attract new investment into its mining sector.
The move is expected to encourage both large companies and small-scale miners, who have recently contributed significantly to gold exports.
Officials say the policy will strengthen investor confidence, boost formal production, and help curb gold smuggling that costs the country billions.
Ghana’s Chamber of Mines welcomed the decision, noting it will make the country more competitive and support long-term growth in one of its key industries.
