Hillbrow digital centre offers youth skills

A new Digital Learning Centre has opened in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, giving Grade 7 to Grade 9 learners free access to coding, robotics and digital skills training.
Netstar and Altron launched the centre with Jozi My Jozi and MES at the BG Alexander Estate to help inner-city youth gain STEM skills.
Learners rotate through robotics, problem-solving and computer literacy programmes, while nearby schools can also use the facility during the school day.
The Hillbrow site is the second digital centre launched through the partnership following a similar project in Marshalltown.

Diepsloot youth grow hydro farming businesses

Twenty young South Africans in Diepsloot are running small farming businesses through the Green Acres Hydro-Coop programme, which aims to tackle youth unemployment and food insecurity.
The initiative by Afrika Tikkun, funded by E Squared Investments, uses solar-powered units that combine poultry farming and hydroponic vegetable production.
Participants are gaining hands-on experience in farming, sales, and business while producing food that is sold through local retail partners.
If successful, the project could produce thousands of chickens and vegetables annually, creating both income and meals for surrounding communities.

Trevor Jones receives national honours award
Story 3
South African-born film composer Dr Trevor Jones has received the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver from President Cyril Ramaphosa at the 2026 National Orders.
Jones is being honoured for composing music for films including The Last of the Mohicans, Notting Hill and Labyrinth, and for supporting members of the liberation movement in London during apartheid.
The National Orders recognise people who have made major contributions to South Africa and society.
Born in Cape Town, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music before building a film career in Hollywood and Europe.
Speaking at the ceremony held in Pretoria yesterday, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has praised the recipients, saying they reflect South Africa’s achievements in science, leadership, human rights and national resilience:

Southern African nations bid AFCON 2028

Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe have submitted a joint bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations.
The bid brings together four Southern African football associations in a regional effort to host the continental tournament.
COSAFA President Tariq Babitseng says the countries submitted the bid after CAF President Patrice Motsepe encouraged African regions to pursue major tournament hosting opportunities.
