UJ launches augmented reality experience at Melville Koppies heritage site
Story 1
The University of Johannesburg has launched a new augmented reality experience at the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, bringing a 500-year-old African smelting site to life through digital technology.

The project allows visitors to use smartphones to view a 3D reconstruction of the ancient smelter overlaid on the existing archaeological remains, offering an interactive look at pre-colonial engineering and history.

Developed in collaboration with the Melville Koppies Management Committee, the initiative aims to make heritage education more accessible while preserving the site’s cultural and environmental integrity.
The experience is also designed to promote learning and public engagement through digital storytelling and will be available to students and visitors at the site.

Kennel donation brings warmth and shelter to dogs in Khayelitsha
Story 2
Ten dogs in Khayelitsha will soon have warm shelter for winter after Mdzananda Animal Clinic received a donation of 10 kennels from The Gem Project Sanctuary.
The kennels, built by volunteers from Collinson Group, will provide vulnerable dogs with protection from cold and rainy weather in communities where many animals still lack proper shelter.
The clinic says the donation will help keep dogs dry, safe and warm during the winter months while supporting ongoing animal welfare efforts in Khayelitsha.

Soweto learners explore owl conservation through hands-on programme
Story 3
Learners from Soweto schools have taken part in a live barn owl ringing and release programme at Woodlands Office Park in Sandton as part of an environmental education initiative by OwlProject.org.
The session forms part of the Owl Conservation Club, which teaches children about biodiversity, wildlife protection and environmental responsibility through practical learning experiences.
Three young barn owls, rescued from Cosmo City, were ringed and are being cared for before their release back into the wild.
Organisers say the programme helps learners gain real conservation experience while challenging common myths and fears about owls in their communities.

California students raise funds to protect bald eagle habitat
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A group of California primary school learners are helping raise money to protect an important wildlife area in Big Bear Valley where bald eagles Jackie and Shadow are nesting.

The learners were inspired after following the eagles through a live classroom webcam showing their nesting, eggs and chicks as part of a conservation project.

The land, a key hunting and feeding ground for the eagles, is at risk of being developed into housing unless conservationists raise around 10 million dollars to secure it.
The learners have supported fundraising efforts through bake sales, lemonade stands and awareness drives while conservation groups work to secure the site.
