Gugulethu soup kitchen brings hope to vulnerable families
Story 2
A community initiative in Gugulethu, Cape Town, is helping struggling families through a grassroots feeding programme that provides warm meals to children, unemployed people and elderly residents facing food insecurity.
Jackie’s Soup Kitchen says it has grown from a small act of care into a regular support system for residents who rely on it as a lifeline during difficult times.
Volunteers say the aim is not only to provide food, but also to restore dignity, comfort and a sense of belonging within the community. Despite limited resources, the project continues through donations and volunteer support.

reading crisis
Five school libraries in Alexandra, Johannesburg, are playing a key role in improving literacy in communities where national studies show most Grade 4 learners struggle to read for meaning.
The libraries, set up in converted shipping containers by Breadline Africa, serve thousands of learners each week and are supported by teachers, parents and school communities despite limited resources and no dedicated librarians in most cases.
Schools such as Skeen Primary and Ekukhanyisweni Primary are using the spaces for reading competitions, weekend book loans and literacy development, with some learners going on to achieve scholarships and international opportunities.
The initiative continues to operate despite challenges like limited book stock and language gaps, but remains active and widely used by learners.
