UFS builds local concrete 3D printer
Teaser / Tailpiece story
The University of the Free State’s Green Concrete Lab has built a large-scale concrete 3D printer using locally developed systems, avoiding the need to import the technology.
The project, includes in-house design of the mixing, pumping, robotic and software systems, and has saved an estimated R6 million.
Students helped design, build and operate the printer, which produces concrete structures layer by layer from digital models.
Researchers say the system could support future construction projects by reducing material waste and enabling more complex building designs.
